When you wake up each and every day, what is the first thought of your day? How do you reflect back on the things and activities that you have done the day before, or even the week before? Do you curse about not being able to do a few things that you have planned for the day before? Or instead, do you start up each day feeling accomplished and ready for more challenges ahead?
A book1 that I’ve just started reading talks about the purpose of our lives, what is it that we all want to achieve and what are we doing about it. As the author of the book notes, some of us may be able talk about what we all want to do in life with ease; The places we want to visit, the houses we want to buy, the people we want to meet, or even the life we want to have. But knowing our purposes alone means nothing. And once we are questioned what are our plans to achieve those goals, most of us will just return a blank stare.
Indeed, what are most of us doing on a daily basis that brings us closer to our purpose in life? Do we even know what our purpose in life is and what is it that matters most to us?
I can give no answers here. Everyone in this world is unique. No one can share the exact same purpose in life. One of my purposes in life would be to travel around the world and share my thoughts and vision to people through my photographs. But that may not be your goal and purpose in life, even if you may be a photographer by profession. Therefore, there is no right or wrong answers here, only your answers.
The importance of having a purpose in life is often overlooked in the current modern world. Many misinterpret the meaning of the phrase, “Do not worry about tomorrow: tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” . While the phrase tells us not to worry about our future, it does not mean that we do not need to have a goal and purpose in life!
This post don’t really offer any answers at all. But instead, I hope that it serves as a reminder for us to refocus on our lives.
As we go move along the paths of our lives, focused as we may be, the challenges we faced sometimes steers us away from our goals without us realizing at all. These challenges could be anything. It could be a job promotion that provides you much better salary rates, but also longer working hours. It could be the loss of a loved one or even a birth of a newborn child. Such events would definitely cause us to shift our short term focus onto these new changes in our lives. But by doing so, it’s common for us fail to realign these changes with our main purpose in life.
So, take a short break and give it a thought. What is your matters most to you and what do you intend to do to achieve it?

Most of the time, the key success factor isn’t based on the skill and ability that we have. Instead, the most important habit that any successful person have is none other than persistence.
Thus, when I realised that I had not been persistent at all with the development of Placid Thoughts, I began wonder why I had not been as persistent . I am a little bit of a perfectionist sometimes. Because of that, I tend to keep correcting and working on my thoughts, always reforming the phrases and making sure the grammar is nothing short of perfect. Unfortunately, in that process, I lose focus of the reason that drove me to create Placid Thoughts in the first place. So, instead of allowing the passion to share my thoughts drive this site, I allowed my perfectionist self to take over and scrutinise on the less important things.
It was when I gave this a thought that I saw how important it is for us to be persistent with the work that needs to be done to realise our dreams. It doesn’t really matter whether we do them well or not. In fact, it’s even better if we make mistakes because that’s the only way we will ever learn and continue to grow. As the saying goes, when you fall, make sure you pick up something with you when you get back up.
A winner never quits and a quitter never wins. We always hear this phrase but it’s hard to find one that truly lives by it. As I thought about it, I realise that it is simply our human nature to avoid shaming ourselves. Society has shaped us to feel ashamed when we make mistakes as the world today is full of negativity and criticism. Even the slightest mistake that we make will be blown out of proportion. Because of this, we then start to keep ourselves from the possibility of making any mistakes at all. But in the end, we do nothing in order to avoid making mistakes.
I’ve read a couple of motivational books and listened to a few success stories. I noticed that there was one thing in common. They weren’t necessarily the smartest people in the world. But all of them were very persistent with their goals and was 100 percent passionate with their dreams. It didn’t really matter whether the actions they took was done correctly or not. They just knew that those were the things that needed to be done to achieve their dreams and they just kept doing it no matter what the outcome was.
So, get the belief in yourself that you can achieve what you want in life. Determine what needs to be done and just keep on doing it. It’s not a matter of whether you will ever achieve it. Instead, it’s only a matter of when you will reach the land of your dreams. Keep the passion strong and just keep on going!

Taking a look back at the last few days, I realised why I slacked in penning down my thoughts. For one, I hit a blank trying to figure out a significant lesson I’d learnt or realised for the past few days. Also, when I think I had something to write about, I was feeling too tired to put my thoughts into words. Then I finally realised that I have not been allowing myself to rest enough over the past few days. And even when I did try to rest earlier, I was hit with a bad cough and that impacted my ability to rest as well. And at that thought, I remembered the lesson that I read from the book, “If life is a game, these are the rules”.
In the game of life, you will receive a body. Love it or hate it, the body will be the physical representation and external contact for your soul and mind. There is no body exchange policy, you are basically stuck with what you have gotten for life.
Looking at this unique perspective, it made me realised that like it or not, it’s much easier to get through life if we accept our physical self as we are. And this brings me to the main point of thought. We truly need to love ourselves as we would to love those dearest to our hearts. In the past few weeks, I’ve not given my body the best care and attention with the excuse that I needed it to work for me. But as we all know, a tired body can’t serve the will of the mind at full capacity. And the more we push it, the more tendency it has to just crash down.
I’ve slacked in keeping myself in tip top condition over the past few weeks. I gotten the flu bug a couple of weeks back. And after recovering from it, I didn’t continue to give it extra care and continue back my consumption of fries food, iced water and spicy food despite doctor’s order to avoid them for a while. And as an effect of that, I didn’t allow my body to fully recover from the flu. Had I only allowed my body to rest a little bit more and ‘tortured’ it less, I would have recovered faster and my body will be able work as hard as I needed it to during the past few days. Thus was my mistake, and it’s something I will need to remember as a lesson learnt in the future.
I believe most of us know how important we need to take care of ourselves. But sometimes, we take our body for granted and do not value it highly. Sometimes, we forget that we will be stuck with the same body for life. In fact, our life and death depends on the same body. So, love thy body as you would love another person. In fact, you don’t qualify yourself to love another until you learn to love yourself.
At this note, I think that we should take a moment to reflect how well have we treated our own body. Give it what’s due and it’ll give back to you two-fold! You are how you treat your own body. So, let’s start and give the best to our bodies. After all, it deserves only the best for us and nothing less.

Indeed. Everything you do is a choice. You choose the way you are living today. As we walk on the path of life, we are presented with many crossroads . Some are pretty obvious which turn we should take. However, not everything is easy in life. Therefore, there are also those difficult and confusing crossroads that we face in life. And in the fast pace life we are currently living in right now, we move so fast that we meet many more challenges than before and often, we hastily decide on the choices we make.
Yes, whether it’s right or wrong, it still is a decision you have made that brought you to the ‘you’ today. It’s unfortunate that most people I know blame their circumstances or other people instead of themselves every time they find themselves in a tight situation. Oh, don’t get me wrong here. I am not trying to gloat that I do not make any mistakes or have never made a wrong decision. I have my share of mistakes and I too once blame my circumstances instead of myself. But after a while, I began to realise that everyone faces the same thing in life. So why are some people successful and some aren’t?
You see, when we face difficulties in life, we are often presented with many choices to workaround the problem. It’s up to us to find out what they are and then decide the best course of action. No doubt, I won’t deny that my best course of action will not be the same for you. But that’s another discussion altogether.
Right now, let’s take for example that you find yourself being sick and tired of your current job. You loathe getting up from bed to work everyday. You no longer have the drive and passion for the job as you had the first week you were there. You now realised that your boss only want to squeeze more work out of you. In short, your current job sucks. Thus, you know you have to move. That’s basically seems like the logical move! But you also remind yourself that the job is quite stable and it pays you pretty well. Moving away from this job means moving away from a stable source of income into the unknown again. You also tell yourself that a new job will mean picking up new skills again. So, what can you do? What are the choices here? And what will your decision be?
As I said earlier, there’s is no right or wrong choices here. You decide which course of action is best for you. Here, the one that is willing to take a bit of risk and willing to take on new challenges for a better job prospect will naturally decided to leave for a new job. And the less secure will choose to continue with the lousy job.
My point here is, don’t blame the circumstances. Blame yourself if you find yourself in a situation that you do not like. It was your decision that brought you to where you are today. Did anyone make the decision for you? Even if someone forces you to make a decision, ultimately, it still is your choice and decision. This is where the successful differentiate themselves from the average. They realise that their decisions today determines their future. So, it’s not a choice of liking. They deliberately choose to be what they want to be in the future. In short, what you do today defines what you are tomorrow. And all this boils down the decisions you make in life.
If you want to be a successful tennis player in the near future, what will your decisions be? Even if you do not have the skills today, you will need to decide to practise your strokes and increase your stamina and physique today. You don’t do them because you like it. No one likes to go through the tiring ordeal of training a whole day, day after day. But, if you decide that you want to be the professional tennis player you envision, that what other choice do you have? Of course, you can decide to slack from training as well. After all, it is your life and you live your life the way you like it. Just don’t blame life circumstances when you get beaten by a younger player who trains each and every day. It was your choice to slack training that made you lose.
So, when you need to decide. Take some time and ponder upon the decision. A decision is never easy to make no matter how trivial the matter is. But that’s life. If you were to know what’s behind the doors of choices, life will not be as fun and exciting to live in. Everything would end up being so predictable, won’t it? And to end this post, I’d just share this. One of my mentors told me that ‘a bad decision is better than indecision.’ It’s better to find out that you made a bad or wrong decision and decide to learn from it than never making a decision and be stuck at where you are in life right now. God bless.
